Stuff from this week.
Mostly process shots from the illustration I did for the pencil jack challenge. Managed to get out and paint from life. I always enjoy doing studies from life, but hardly ever do them.
Composing images isn't someting I'm great at at present, and all of the sketches I had up to the point of producing this rough comp weren't great. But I had the idea of bringing the figures together and making it more of a portrait. I actually like the energy in this comp a bit more than the final.
This was a pretty bare-bones underdrawing. I din't give myself a lot of time, so this stage was cut a bit short. Plus I get quite impacient whilst working from time to time.
So after kind of feeling that my drawing would work, I jumped right into sloshing around watercolour. It was a good time, but in reflection I should have spent longer on the drawing, especially the faces, which I feel are quite weak. I tried to get it right with the ink, but it didn't work. So I had to lick it quite a bit, and turned out too busy in those areas. You can't make up for poor foundations with extra tinsel, or something like that. Also, erase construction lines that you don't need anymore before painting, as your cant lift them from under the watercolour. Or at least, I couldn't here.
And a beach. Well, a tiny crop of a beach.

Random sketches and some studies
Most of this stuff is from the new sketchbook I started from the last week or so. Mostly focuesed on gesture poses, and trying to learn stuff for the predator piece I just put up. I intended to paint and ink the final, but I left it too late. So just went all out with the old pencil!

The Pest Predator
Challenge over at Pencil Jack - Turn Horror Icon into Super Hero. Well, I turned him into a local trade hero, never mind.

Dystopian Society
Another entry for Everbrawl (93). Had a lot of ideas with this one, but struggled a bit to pull it off. I Definitely need to spend more time on the under drawing, and learn how to control water media better. Happy I got it done though :).

Week 7 & 8
Most of the last fortnight was spent on the Scout/Sentry illustration, and prepping/composing the image. I've included some of it here, for anyone who is interested. I've always let myself down in the by not investing any great amount of time preparing an image. I would usually just jump in and go for it, and the results would seem bland and shallow.
I've been trying to learn how to do so by learning from James Gurney and Syd Mead, because those guys seem to know what they're talking about. I'm also on a bit of a mission to do things traditionally, as they would. A lot of tracing and re-drawing was done on the Scout piece, but that was probably more to do with me stumbling through the process than anything else. Also trying to keep up my watercolour painting. I haven't got any Gouache on me at present, but I really want to play around with that some more.

Marvels the Scout (Sentry's sidey)
So, I was stuck on what to do for the Everbrawl topic: Lesser Known Marvel Characters Meets Moebius. A friend of mine recomended that I look at the Sentry, which I did, and thought that was the way to go. As far as the Moebius elements go, I knew that I wanted to depict boats flying over the desert, with a few of Moebius' characters, as well as some members from the Sentry's story.
I couldn't really decide how to compose this to get the best view of All the characters I wanted to illustrate, and the flying boat. Just before starting the final, somehow The Scout and Normie (the dog) became the focal characters, and the Sentry(Void) was relegated to the back ground. I guess that the Scout is even more obscure than The Sentry, so it fits the brief better.

Week 6
Not much going on this week. Been messing around with ink quite a bit, decided I wanted to learn how to draw horses; even had a go at a little watercolour of my back garden. Would like to do more.

Week 4 & 5
Missed last weeks update because of VE partying on my front lawn. Spent most of this week studying naked mole rats. What a time to be alive!
Most of the ones in ballpoint were from memory, and kind of looked like either sausages with legs, or normal rats. I got pretty decent results after a few goes. I do think looking at a reference and then tryig to draw it from memory helps you remember it better than just studying it from obervation alone. Even though it does take time.

Mole Rat Fink
Mole Rat Fink. Pretty happy with how this turned out. Hot rod could have been better, the perspective makes it look very thin. Ney mind.

Week 3
Mostly just pages of pure randomness. Some cars from life whilst waiting in a hospital carpark,
and some thumbs for the Space Pirats.

Space Pirates
This is for a challenge over on Pencil Jack. Did a few thumbnails and jumped strait in.
About 3 hours sketching, maybe.

Week 2
Some skeches and a couple sketch challenges from this week.
I keep changing my method back and forwards between something slow and deliberate (very little blocking out), and
then really sketchy and quick. At the moment the latter is winning.
(These haven't scanned the best, I might try and just upload photos from my phone next week.)
